Departments and functional roles

In this article

In a finance team of thirty, knowing who is in Accounts Payable and who is a manager is useful when you are deciding who to ask for something. That is what these are for.

  • How to create one and assign it
  • Where the labels show up
  • Why neither grants any access at all
  • Whether you need them (probably not, in a small team)

01 · Why

Why do we have this?

In a finance team of thirty, knowing who is in Accounts Payable and who is a manager is useful when you are deciding who to ask for something. That is what these are for.

02 · How

Create and assign

  1. Go to Settings → Members.
  2. To create them, use the Departments or Functions tab and press Add.
  3. To assign one, use the Assign department or Assign function control on a person’s row.

03 · Expected result

The labels show as chips in the DEPARTMENTS and FUNCTIONAL ROLES columns on the Members list, and you can filter by them.

04 · Notes

A person can have more than one of each

Both fields accept several labels at once.

05 · FAQ

Common questions

So what is the point of them?

Finding people, and filtering the Members list. In a small team you may never need them.

Can I use a department to control which workspace somebody sees?

Not from the Members page. Workspace access is set per person — see Who can see which workspace.

Do I have to fill these in?

No. They are optional and can stay empty.
